Which Bilstein Damper Type is right for you?

Bilstein offers the most comprehensive range and the best quality of dampers (also known as shock absorbers) on the market and are one of the most recognisable brands in motoring. They directly supply many of the World’s leading car manufacturers so there’s every likelihood that your car was fitted with Bilstein dampers as it made its way along the factory production line.

No matter how well engineered your dampers are, they will eventually wear out, especially given the poor condition of many roads across the UK at present. Like all suspension products, their performance usually gradually declines over time rather than suddenly failing and can be functioning much less well than they should be for some time before they’re eventually picked up as a failure notice on an MOT.

Replacing your dampers is often a routine service item with little discussion between you and your mechanic but it’s an excellent opportunity to review your suspension setup and ideal requirements.

Bilstein offer a range of dampers to cover OE (Original Equipment) replacements, to ones specifically designed for heavier load carrying vehicles, or lowered/raised vehicles and even full-blown motorsport.

So, what ranges are available and what’s right for you?

We can split their ranges into two main categories, OE replacement dampers (supplied as dampers on their own) or Performance kits (dampers and springs).

OE REPLACEMENT PERFORMANCE KITS
B4
for a driving experience just like when the car was brand new
B12 Pro-Kit
combines B8 dampers with Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs for up to 40mm lower ride height
B6
improved OE replacement designed for heavier loads (e.g. towing, carrying, camper conversions, armoured vehicles)
B12 Sportline
combines B8 dampers with Eibach Sportline lowering springs for 40+mm lowering
B8
perfect OE replacement for aftermarket lowering springs and OE sport suspension. They feature a shortened damper body and reduced stroke
B14
adjustable ride height but non-adjustable damper settings. Usually between 30-50mm lower than OE ride height
B8 Lift
B8 dampers are also available in extended damper body lengths for some vehicle lift kit arrangements and are designed to work specifically with longer springs.
B16
same as the B14 but with adjustable damper settings. These can work with Bilstein’s Damptronic, ride control or iRC control.

Summary

If you looking to simply refresh your tired suspension, fit Bilstein B4 with your choice of springs standard height or modestly lowered springs like Eibach Pro-Kit.

If you’re looking to start towing, carrying more weight regularly or converting your vehicle to a camper, you should choose the B6 dampers.

If you wish to lower or raise your vehicle, choose B8 dampers and add your choice if spring. If you’re looking to lower by only a small amount (up to 30mm) and you’d like to improve handling but with less ride comfort compromise, you may be better with the B4 damper.

If you’re looking for maximum performance for road and/or track, choose one of the Performance kits like the B12, B14 or B16 (if they’re available for your vehicle).

Just remember you may need to purchase additional items too like new strut top mounts, bump stops, new strut mounting bolts and perhaps anti-roll bar links. At TDC, we can help advise and supply those for you.
